The Right Dog Leash for Your Pet

Choosing the right dog leash is important so that you and your dog can both enjoy your
time spent together outdoors.

Overall, the best leash is one that allows you to communicate effectively with your dog.
Your dog should understand easily what it is you’d like him or her to do.

Like anything, there are different leashes and they all serve different purposes. When
choosing the right leash for your dog, keep in mind the kind of training you plan to do
with your dog so that you can choose the tools that are best suited for that training.

A standard dog leash is made of nylon or leather and is usually 4-to-6 ft long. It is ideal
for walks and basic obedience training.

A retractable leash does just that – it coils or retracts right back in. Retractable leashes
vary in length but tend to extend up to 30 ft. Retractable leashes are more suited to a dog
learning the “stay” command or to an already trained dog. The length between dog owner
and the dog is so pronounced, an untrained dog could tangle the leash around tree stumps,
posts, and other objects; not to mention, it could place itself inadvertently in harm’s way.

When choosing a leash – whether it’s standard or retractable, bare in mind the size of
the dog. A Chihuahua; for instance, should have a lightweight, narrow, leash, whereas a
Rottweiler will need a thicker and heavier leash.

If your leash of choice comes with embellishments, make sure they are securely attached.
Tassels, fake flowers, and other decorative touches can come off and possibly choke your
dog. Tug at the decoration before you present the leash to your pet. Generally speaking,
larger dogs fare better without the décor.

Lastly, even the bes t leash will see its day. Leashes are used daily by your dog and will
naturally undergo wear and tear. Once you find the right leash for your dog it’s best to
buy two and always keep a backup leash at home in case one should break.
